The Meesters Page

Love is like the wild rose-briar;
Friendship like the holly-tree.
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms,
But which will bloom most constantly?
Emily Brontė (1818-48)

True friendship is a sturdy, robust plant that endures the vicissitudes of life and blooms longer and brighter as time passes. Our time spent as humans on this planet cannot be measured just by deeds accomplished and objects collected. The true content of life is the relationships that we engage in, and the joy, love and happiness that we spread about as a result.

So some true friends had a reunion over the Memorial Day 2001 weekend. There are a bunch of photos here!

So who are these people?

The handsome guy on the far right is me, Richard, owner of this web page.

To my right is John Schettler. John runs the Writing Shop in Ventura CA., where he writes resumes, does desktop publishing and designs Web Sites. John is a long-time war gamer and designer, PC gamer, master strategist, chess expert and all purpose smart ass. You can find lots more information about him on his own web site. For many years John and I have been "writing buddies." He is about to publish an historical novel that takes place in Ancient China which you can check out by clicking here. John and I have maintained our friendship for over thirty years, through letters, phone calls, email and, more recently, regular visits. The gods broke the mold after they created John. I don't expect I'll ever meet anyone like him again.

The woman standing in front of John is Marie Fiorillo. Marie currently lives in Camarillo, CA. but will be moving soon to the Big Apple to pursue Unfinished Musical Business. She is a fine singer, voice teacher, pianist and counselor. She is also the only one of us to graduate from public high school, as the remainder of us had our Roman Catholic high school education ground into us at Santa Clara High in Oxnard, CA.

Next to John is the remarkable Tony Prost. Tony  is truly a "renaissance man," a graduate of the Integrated Arts program at St. Mary's College in Moraga (my own alma mater, we attended school together there as well). He has the ability to absorb information and process it at an incredible rate, and I have lost count of the innumerable conversations we have had regarding history, music, literature, politics, ad infinitum. He currently lives in San Diego where he practices estate law. His most recent creative project is a translation of the Gospel of John as written by Nonnos of Panopolis, which you can check out here.

At the far left is the honorable Gerard Kapuscik, currently employed in the County of Ventura. He is the veteran of many political battles, some won, some lost. He lives in Ventura with his wife and two sons. Gerard is of Polish extraction and is proud of it (although he claims Sicilian heritage as well). His heroes are John F. Kennedy and Napoleon Bonaparte.

So what does "Meesters" mean? When we attended Santa Clara High School in the late sixties and early seventies, most of the faculty was made up of men from Holland, a Catholic fraternal order (I forget which one specifically). When one of these brothers would become upset at a kid in the class, he would address the miscreant as "Mister," except with the Dutch accent it always consistently appeared as "MEESTER." Somehow we applied the name to ourselves, and it stuck.

This group of truly wonderful human beings are my closest buddies in the world next to my family.
